My Prescription Medication Use Feels Out of Control

Contact your prescriber or another qualified medical professional and describe what has changed. Do not abruptly stop or change a prescribed medication based on this guide. Ask for an assessment that considers the medication, your original health condition, other substances, and any withdrawal or safety concerns.

Make the concern specific

You may be taking more than directed, running out early, using someone else’s medication, or feeling frightened about getting through the day without it. You can raise any of these concerns without deciding in advance what diagnosis applies.

Physical dependence, medication misuse, and addiction are not interchangeable terms. Ask the clinician to explain what your pattern means and which next steps are appropriate. A concern about medication use does not make the original condition you were treating unimportant.

Bring a complete medication picture

  • Medication names, strengths, instructions, and how you actually take them.
  • When the pattern changed and what you were trying to manage.
  • Other prescriptions, over-the-counter medicines, supplements, alcohol, and other drugs.
  • Any missed doses, withdrawal concerns, unwanted effects, or episodes requiring urgent care.
  • Prescribers and pharmacies involved, plus previous treatment experiences.

Use bottles, a written list, or a pharmacy record if helpful. Tell the clinician if a product was not obtained from a pharmacy or its contents are uncertain.

Ask for a medically guided plan

FDA warns that suddenly stopping benzodiazepines or reducing them too quickly can cause serious withdrawal, including seizures. Do not copy another person’s taper or use an online schedule as your personal plan.

For any medication concern, ask your prescriber what to do next and how the original symptoms will be treated. Trouble breathing, inability to wake someone, or seizures require emergency help.

Questions to ask your provider

  1. What assessment is needed to understand my current use?
  2. What should I do about my next dose or refill?
  3. Do I need medical monitoring or another treatment setting?
  4. How will pain, attention, anxiety, sleep, or another original concern be addressed?
  5. Who will coordinate prescribing if I enter a program?
  6. What should I do if symptoms worsen before the next appointment?

Ask for clear, individualized instructions and a contact for follow-up. This guide does not replace that medical plan.

How to explore support at Alpine

Tell admissions the specific medication and your concerns. Ask about adult program fit, assessment, and whether medical services elsewhere are needed before admission. Do not assume every medication or addiction medication is managed in-house.

If mental health concerns are part of the picture, explore dual diagnosis care. If you are worried about stopping, read the withdrawal planning guide and seek medical guidance.

Common questions

Can dependence occur when a medication is prescribed?

For some medications, yes. Ask your prescriber to explain your situation and the distinction between dependence and a substance use disorder.

Will I have to stop all my medications to enter treatment?

Do not assume that. Ask the program and your prescriber to review your specific medications, available services, and any necessary coordination.

What if I feel embarrassed telling my prescriber?

Bring a short written description of what has changed. An accurate account gives the professional important information for planning care.

When to seek emergency help

Call 911 for immediate danger or a medical emergency, including trouble breathing, inability to wake someone, or seizures. Do not wait for an admissions form or callback. If you may act on thoughts of harming yourself or cannot keep yourself safe, seek emergency care now.

Start with a conversation

Tell Alpine admissions what is happening and what you need help arranging. Ask about assessment, program fit, scheduling, and costs before making a decision.

Admission depends on individual assessment, availability, and applicable benefit or authorization requirements. This guide is educational and does not replace individualized medical or mental health care.
