My Loved One Wants to Leave Treatment—What Can I Do?

Prepare for a calm conversation about safety, concerns, and next steps.

This is a self-reflection, not a validated screening test. It has no diagnostic score and cannot decide which treatment you need.

Start the check-in

Before you begin

Check what needs attention before a decision. You can leave items blank or stop at any time. More checked boxes do not equal a diagnosis or a higher level of care.

No name, email, or phone number is needed. This check-in does not send your choices to admissions or save them in browser storage. General website analytics may still operate. Use a private device when possible. Printing may leave a copy on your device or printer. You choose whether to contact Alpine.

Need urgent help? If someone is in immediate danger, cannot be woken, has trouble breathing, has a seizure, or may have overdosed, call 911. For suicidal thoughts or emotional crisis in the U.S., call 988. Do not wait for an online result or an admissions call. These tools are not monitored.

Your check-in

Select the items you want help with. Then choose “Show my next steps.” If you prefer, read the guidance below without making any selections.

You can still read each item and the next steps below. Interactive results need JavaScript.

What your answers can help you discuss

This checklist cannot decide whether someone should stay or leave. Adults have choices and legitimate concerns deserve review.

I do not understand why they want to leave.

Ask what happened, what feels hardest, and what would help.

They report withdrawal, medical symptoms, or feeling unsafe.

Ask for prompt clinical attention. Use emergency services if danger is immediate.

They feel homesick, frustrated, or overwhelmed.

Validate the feeling and ask the care team to help with a short-term support plan.

We have not spoken with the treating clinician.

With permission, request a care discussion before a planned departure.

There is no follow-up care or medication plan.

Ask about safer transitions, appointments, and medication access.

I feel pulled into threats, bargaining, or a rushed rescue.

Pause nonurgent promises and state the support you can realistically offer.

Choose one small step

Ask: Can we discuss your concerns with the care team and understand the safest options before deciding?

Words you can use: “I have noticed a change. I would like help understanding it and making a safe plan.”

Common questions

What if I did not check anything?

That does not rule out a concern. You may still ask a qualified professional about anything that worries you.

Who sees my choices?

This check-in does not submit your choices to Alpine. It does not alert a clinician. If you want help, contact a provider yourself.

Can this tell me whether I need residential care?

No. A care provider needs to consider your health, safety, daily life, support, and preferences before recommending treatment.
