Family Participation in Recovery

Group therapy session

FAMILY THERAPY

Please make it a point to come to family therapy. This will be held once a week and can be set up through the resident’s Point Person. The families are such an important part of the resident’s recovery. It’s important to work through issues and resentments while they are in treatment. It is also important to make sure they have a safe place to return to.

FAMILY GROUPS

This is a good time to learn and also to process a lot of your feelings. It’s extremely hard to love an addict. You are also suffering and need support from other families that are going through similar situations.

SUNDAY VISITS

Visiting is very important to show support to your loved one. They need to know that you forgive them, that you still love them and that they have a good support system. The first stages of recovery can be extremely scary so this can comfort them.

GIVING SUPPORT

When an addict is honestly trying to recover they deserve your support in all areas. Don’t help an addict use. If they are actively using, don’t help them with anything. No money, no support, no home, no family, no food, no shower. This will help them reach rock bottom much faster. Don’t ever take these natural consequences away from them.

AL-ANON

This meeting is much like an AA meeting except it’s for the families of the addicts. The Al-Anon family groups are a fellowship of relatives and friends of alcoholics who share their experience, strength, and hope, in order to solve their common problems. There are no dues for membership. Al-Anon is self-supporting through it’s own voluntary contributions.
