Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy

The clinical team at Alpine Recovery Lodge uses EMDR therapy during individual therapy sessions to help those struggling with post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) find relief from their symptoms. Trauma-focused psychotherapy, like EMDR, is one of the most effective types of treatment for PTSD.

What is EMDR Therapy?

EMDR is a safe and effective psychotherapy that allows people struggling with PTSD to process their core emotions, upsetting memories, and thoughts about the traumatic event in a safe and controlled environment.

Following trauma, people with PTSD commonly struggle to make sense of what happened to them. EMDR targets the way people carry their emotions and hold the trauma in their body so they can acknowledge it, let it go, feel safe, and finally begin living again.

How Does EMDR Work?

During EMDR therapy, you will be asked to recall emotionally disturbing memories in brief sequential doses while focusing on an external stimulus (e.g., a back-and-forth movement or sound). Therapist-directed lateral eye movements are the most effective and commonly used technique, however, there are a variety of stimuli, including things like hand-tapping and audio stimulation.

EMDR helps people process these painful emotions by creating new associations between the trauma and more adaptive information (e.g., the external stimulus). These new associations allow a person to process the trauma, overcome emotional distress, and move the memories to more stable, long-term memory.

Alpine Recovery Lodge offers EMDR therapy for post traumatic stress disorder as part of their substance use disorders program. Research suggests people with PTSD are up to 14 times more likely to develop a substance use disorder. This integrated approach combines pharmacological and behavioral interventions along with individual therapy sessions to help you overcome symptoms of PTSD.

If you think you may be suffering from a substance use disorder as well as PTSD, the skilled clinical team at Alpine Recovery Lodge can help you overcome both with evidence-based, individualized, and comprehensive EMDR therapy. It’s time to restore your healthy mind and body, develop healthy emotional skills and mindfulness, and enjoy long-lasting and sustainable sobriety.
